I have fond memories of Chipping, visiting the picturesque village as a child, after walking around Brock Bottom or Beacon Fell with my parents. Little has changed in the village, except for a few new houses and the sad closure of the furniture manufacturers. The village shop also closed for a while, which was, I think – the oldest known shop in the country (established in 1668). We’re reliably informed that the shop and tea room has now reopened (as at 2020), here’s hoping it’s well supported as it’s an important bit of history!
This particular Chipping walk was one of the very first walks that I added to my original website bowlandwalks, but it was sadly lost when all of the data corrupted when moving to www.explorebowland.co.uk. Therefore, we’ve had to redo the map but we’re pretty sure it is accurate.
The route starts off at the pay and display car park behind Cobbled Corner Café. For a little while you walk along Church Raike Road until you take a right onto Fish House Lane. Here you’ll pass Wolfen Mill Country Retreats. Next, it’s onto Twins Brook Road which eventually turns into a farm track leading to Burnslack Farm.
The road passes a few beautiful farms and offers absolutely delightful views of Parlick Fell and Saddle Fell. At Burnslack the road ends and you take a right, onto a farm track which leads to Lickhurst Farm. Here you’ll briefly join the road again and pass an old red BT Phone Box. Take a right turn and head to Higher Greystoneley.
You’ll pass a few houses, then the path takes you into a small wooded area and along a decent track until you reach the old quarry called Knot Hill, which is definitely worth checking out.
Head back down the farm track onto the road to finish off this delightful Chipping walk.
